Dear Editor,
I am glad that Hydar Ally highlighted the development of the PPP Administration, especially as it relates to Sophia. For the record, sir, I was born there at a time when Sophia only had 11houses and a tannery. The Bel Air Dairy and a house for the manager were built later. Other than that, it was sheer bush, mosquitoes, snakes, alligators and swamp.
The roads at Bel Air and the gutter dam were built with burnt earth from a heap opposite the residence of Janet Jagan. My mother used to fetch dirt on a tray to that burnt heap, and my neighbour was burnt severely for providing the same service when she unfortunately slipped and fell on the fire. Those very roads are now weather proof, thanks to the PPP Administration.
Then, we had a bridge with a turning gate linking the new New Haven to the Sophia Dam. Now, we have a dilapidated bridge that floats away during the rainy season. That, Hydar, for the people of Mud Dam, Sophia is what we call progressive development.
My parents and all the original inhabitants, except one, died there, and we still had Mud Dam, Sophia. I am 65 years old, lived there and still we have Mud Dam, Sophia. My granddaughter was born there. She is 23 years old, and still we have Mud Dam, Sophia. I know of one particular parent that has a great grandchild, and yet we have Mud Dam, Sophia.
I wrote two letters in the newspapers and one directly to the Minister of Public Works requesting an all-weather road, and still we have Mud Dam, Sophia.
So, Hydar, we would like to be part of this development, and all we want is an all-weather road, less than quarter of a mile from New Haven to Bel Air Promenade on the Sophia Dam, and a respectable bridge. Is that too much to ask for?
