National colts begin regional campaign against Barbados tomorrow
The Guyana under-17 cricket team will face Barbados in their opening match of the regional under-17 limited overs cricket competition which runs from December 11-17 in Trinidad.
Although the team has several talented batsmen the strength should be in the bowling department on what should be slow tracks.
Keon Joseph is arguably the second quickest bowler in Guyana behind senior team pacer Brandon Bess and has already played at the regional under-19 level. He will spearhead a strong pace attack which also includes left-arm pacer Andre Stoll who is the only surviving member from last year’s team. Seon Daniels, the other quickie in the squad, is among the fastest improving bowlers in Guyana and has already attended national senior trials.
Ricardo Devers, the leading bowler in the Demerara Inter-Association and National Inter-County under-17 tournaments, should spearhead the spin attack along with West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan and left-arm spinner Trison Carmichael.
Batting all-rounders Jomal La Fleur and Delon Fernandes could also bowl useful off-spin while Skipper Dexter Solomon is already being touted as one of the best wicketkeepers in Guyana.
Herell Greene, the leading batsman in the inter-county under-17 tournament is also the reserve ‘keeper while La Fleur, Fernandes, Dayanand Roopnarine, Quincy Ovid-Richardson, Jomally Odle and Clinton Pestano are all expected to do well with the bat.
Former national youth batsman Orin Bailey is the coach and ex-Guyana first class fast bowler Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis is the Manager.
Kaieteur News presents a profile of the 14 players, Manager and Coach.
Dexter Carl Solomon –Captain-(GNIC) Born Oct 24th 1991.
Dexter is a very level-headed Captain and one of the most talented wicketkeepers in Guyana. A sound lower middle order batsman, he is expected to do well as both players and captain in his first year at this level. Captained Demerara to championship honours in the under-17 inter-county tournament.
Jomally Jason Odle-Vice/Captain- (Tucber Park) Born Oct 26th 1992
A confident middle order batsman and one of the better young players against spin bowling; Jomally is a talented right-hander and alert fielder. He is the grandson of former West Indies wicket keeper Milton Pydanna.
Andre Burnham Stoll (GYO) Born Jan 25th 1992
An extremely talented and confident left-arm pacer who can hit the ball in the lower order, Andre is never afraid to back himself in the middle and is a very good catcher inside the 30-yead circle. He is the only player with previous national under-17 experience and could consider himself unfortunate to not gain selection on Guyana’s under-19 team this year.
Keon Andre Joseph (Achievers) Born Nov 28th 1991
Keon was arguable the quickest bowler in the last regional under-19 series in Barbados despite a niggling groin injury and if fully fit could torment the Caribbean’s young batsmen on what should be slow pitches. Born in Linden in Demerara, Keon moved to West Berbice as a 14-year-old and his cricket development has been rapid after starting his schoolboy career as a spin bowler.
Seon Daniels (MSC) Born April 3rd 1992
Has the ability to develop into a genuine fast bowler, Seon is the best teenager fast bowler in Guyana who can produce both swing and seam movement. A tall strong lad, he can give the ball a ‘whack’ in the lower order.
Herell Francis Greene (Queenstown United SC) Born July 10th 1992
A talented opening batsman from Essequibo, Herell scored the most runs in the under-17 inter county series and impressed with the bat in this year’s Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools tournament in Barbados. A reserve Keeper, he is sweet timer of the ball and should be among the runs in Trinidad. He is the first player from the village of Queenstown, Central Essequibo to represent them at any level of cricket.
Ricardo Andre Devers (GYO) Born June 7th 1992
A tall off-spinner who turns the ball a long way, Ricardo’s cricket has shown tremendous mental and physical improvement in the last year. He was the leading bowler in the Inter County under-17 tournament taking 7-37 to bowl Demerara to championship honours on the final day.
A sharp fielder, especially at gully, Ricardo has the ability to develop into a genuine all-rounder later in his career and should enjoy the Trinidad pitches. He is the son of former Guyana under-19 and senior Berbice Inter-County off-spinner Sean Devers.
Amir Khan (Everest) Born Sept 3rd 1992
Amir represented the West Indies in this year’s under-15 World Cup in the Caribbean and bowls with superb control for a wrist spinner and could develop into a genuine all-rounder later in his career.
A disciplined player who was one of the Standbys for this year’s Guyana under-19 side, Amir should be successful in Trinidad. His father was among the better first division left-arm spinners during the 1980s.
Clinton Nicholas Pestano (Skeldon) Born Nov 1st 1992
A sweet timer of the ball Clinton is expected to play a meaningful role in the middle order on pitches which should not be too different from the ones he grew up batting on in Berbice. A good fielder, a lot is expected of him in Trinidad.
Joemal Anthony La Fleur (Tucber Park) Born March 24th 1993
A little right-handed batsman and off-spin bowler, Joemal’s recent performance with the bat is not a true indication of his talent while his steady, if not destructive bowling should add variety to the bowling attack. An excellent fielder, Joemal is the brother of Guyana under-19 Skipper Eugene La Fleur and is the specialist all-rounder in the side.
Delon Delroy Dwain Fernandes (GCC) Born March 9th 1992
A fluent left-handed middle order batsman when on the go, he is considered by many as the team’s best batsman. His useful part-time off-spin could come in handy and he is expected to be among the leading scorers in the tournament.
Quincy Ovid-Richardson (GNIC) Born Nov 4th 1991
An attacking opening batsman who loves to cut and pull the fast bowlers. Quincy only began playing cricket seriously last year and could be very effective at the top of the order in Trinidad.
Dayanand Roopnarine (Everest) Born Feb 11th 1993
A little left-hander with plenty of talent, Dayanand stokes the ball beautifully and should be among the runs in Trinidad.
Trinson Octavia Carmichael (Tucber Park) Born July 4th 1992
Trinson CarmichealOne of three players in the side from New Amsterdam team Tucber Park, Trinson is a crafty left-arm spinner who should do well bowling in Trinidad conditions. Orin Lancelot Bailey –Coach-(DCC) Born Sept 1st 1959Orin Bailey
Orin represented Guyana in the 1978 regional under-19 tournament and has played professionally in England, Holland and the USA before becoming a qualified coach.
He represented DCC and GDF at the first division level as an attacking batsman and was the national under-19 coach in 2003. He has also coached the Demerara senior team and has been involved with the preparation of every national youth team in the last five years.
Robert Orlington ‘Pacer’ Adonis-Manager-(DCC) Born March 16th 1948.
The 60-year-old Adonis played two first-class matches in the 1970s and is one of the hardest workers off the field in local cricket.
Adonis, a Demerara junior selector, has served as Manager for the Demerara senior team on several occasions and was the Manager of Guyana’s first under-17 side last year.
In 1972 at Bourda, ‘Pacer’ comprehensively bowled Terrence Jarvis for a duck with the third ball of the New Zealand innings on his first class debut after Guyana had made 493-4 declared with Alvin Kallicharran, Clive Lloyd and Roy Fredericks making centuries.
Adonis finished with 1-80 from 20 overs as New Zealand fell for 488 with Glen Turner making 259 and Bevan Congdon 103 in a 171-run second wicket partnership. Lloyd hit an unbeaten ton in Guyana’s second innings as the match ended in a draw.
This was to be Adonis’ only first-class match for Guyana.
His second and last first-class game was in 1974 for Demerara when he took 1-41 and 0-5 against Berbice at the Rose Hall ground in Canje in the drawn Jones Cup Inter-County four-day final. ‘Pacer’ also played in England in the early 1970s.
