Special group seeks to give prisoners’children a good Christmas

The Women’s Ministries, the Prison Fellowship International and the Personal Ministries Department of the Guyana Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, in collaboration with the Guyana Prison Services, yesterday launched the ‘Angel Tree Programme.’

The Venezuelan Embassy in Guyana donated $100,000 to the programme, which has as its objective providing gifts to children of persons who are in prison during the Christmas season.
This venture commenced as an effort during the season of goodwill to comfort children whose parents are in prison.
During the launching and donation, which took place at the embassy in Thomas Street, Venezuelan Ambassador to Guyana Dario Morandy said that the donation is part of a humanitarian effort by the people of Venezuela.
He added that the embassy has been assisting in such gestures for some time now.
This, he noted, has been a customary endeavour to give gifts to children in need.
Director of the Children’s Ministries, Deborah Henry, who was also at the launching, said that the organization is ‘very thankful for the embassy’s generosity.’
She added that, with the help of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, they are pleased to provide some happiness to children of prisoners, especially during this Christmas season.
When asked about the number of children who will be benefiting from this meaningful gesture, an employee of the Children’s Ministries, Richard James, said that, while many children will benefit from the cause, he was not able to give an exact figure.
He added that they are willing to network with other organisations, encouraging persons to donate towards the cause.
