The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport / National Sport Commission in collaboration with the Regional Democratic Council of Region #10 successfully hosted a Day of Interaction on Sunday last at the Mackenzie Sports Club in Linden.
This event was the fifth and final in a series of interactive community sessions planned and organized by the National Sports Commission for 2008. The event attracted hundreds of participants from Region #10 with participants coming from villages such as Muritaro, Rockstone, 58 Miles Mabura, Coomacka, Bayrock, Malali, Wisroc and Christianburg to name a few.
The activity, held under the theme ‘Unity through Sports’ was part of the National Sports Commission’s programme to actively engage communities across the country to highlight the importance of exercise and a healthy lifestyle, to promote a spirit of peace, unity and cooperation among communities and to encourage communities to make use of the many grounds, fields and other sport facilities available to them.
On hand for the event were Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Director of Sports Mr. Neil Kumar, Regional Chairman Mortimer Mingo and other Regional Officials.
During the event, Minister Anthony and Director of Sports Kumar interacted with many of the community and sport leaders from the many communities participating in the events. These discussions led to the Minister making a commitment to fervently support the development of amateur boxing, table tennis and chess in the Region.
A number of chess sets were presented to the community to aid in the resuscitation of the game in the Region along with a number of boxing gloves and head guards. In addition to this, a number of table tennis boards and equipment will soon be distributed to schools throughout Region #10. Receiving the boxing equipment on behalf of the Region #10 boxing fraternity was Clevon Rock, Commonwealth Youth Games Silver Medalist and Linden resident.
Addressing the participants at the event, Minister Anthony commented that the importance of an event of this nature is its ability to bring diverse groups of people together so they may learn about each other. He further stated that when persons get the opportunity to interact with each other they often receive enlightenment which allows them to dispel long held prejudices. Minister Anthony noted that the aim of the series of events was to bring people together, hence the theme “Unity through sports.”
There were hundreds who participated in the disciplines of softball cricket, volleyball, football, dominoes, circle tennis and chess, while there were exhibition table tennis games played by National Under – 21 players and a Taekwando demonstration by the Guyana Taekwando Association.
Results from the events:
In a very exciting and crowd pleasing encounter in female cricket, Christianburg All-Stars emerged victorious over Wisroc, while Muritaro won over 58 Miles Mabura on the male side.
In dominoes, Royal Challengers topped the table with 73 games followed by Bayrock with 71 games and Christianburg All Stars with 61 games.
