Ex-presidential guard Reginald Brown was yesterday granted $200,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson for allegedly stealing one Hilux pick-up, PGG 8348, property of Kalmia Mohamed, valued at $5.8M.
The alleged theft occurred on November 26 at Carifesta Avenue.
It is also alleged that, on the said day, the accused stole one brown handbag valued at $5,000; US$300; Cdn$10; $TT 20; two cell phones valued at $200,000 and $30,000 in cash, among other items from the same Kalmia Mohamed.
He was represented by attorney-at-law Jerome Khan, who in a bail application told the court that his client is a respectable businessman.
The lawyer added that the accused and the victim share a relationship, and that they had a misunderstanding. Brown, he said, was trying to avoid further conflict, so he drove away with the vehicle.
Khan told the court that Brown would offer the victim numerous gifts.
The lawyer said that his client had wanted to end the relationship, and that he did not steal the vehicle. The lawyer said that the vehicle was returned to Mohamed by a driver who would usually drive them around.
Khan added that both the defendant and the virtual complainant share properties in Trinidad and in Guyana.
Police prosecutor Denise Griffith did not object to bail, but noted to the court that, “If two people indeed love each other, gifts should not be an issue.”
She further told the court that the issue before the court is stealing the vehicle. The prosecutor explained that both Mohamed and the defendant are committed to their respective spouses. She said that Mohamed had wanted to end the relationship, contrary to what the defendant is claiming.
Brown is expected to make his next court appearance on January 20.
