Returning home from a night of ‘sporting,’ Carl Smith ‘junior,’ 27, early yesterday morning, lost control of the car he was driving and crashed into a concrete bridge, killing himself and leaving his uncle, Roy ‘Baigan’ Ramdeen, with a broken arm and other injuries.
The accident occurred at Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara.
A woman, identified as Marilyn Gobin, who was also in the car, is reportedly in a serious condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
She fractured her arm in two places, and sustained injuries to her back.
According to reports, the trio was returning home from a barbecue in a nearby village when Smith, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his uncle’s car and crashed into the concrete bridge.
According to a police release, “Smith received injuries about his body as a result of the impact made when the car collided with the bridge.”
Ramdeen, who following the accident was treated at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) and sent away, explained to this newspaper that they left the barbecue just after three in the morning.
“All I hear is ‘blam,’ and de next ting I know I wake up in de hospital with a broken hand,” said Ramdeen.
He added that he lost consciousness when the car made impact with the bridge, and maintained that he could not remember anything else.
Meanwhile, Smith’s father, Carl Smith ‘senior,’ recounted that someone came to his Unity Street house at approximately 4:00 hours yesterday and told him that his son had been involved in a car accident and was probably dead.
Upon hearing this, Smith said, he immediately went to the WDRH, hoping to see his son alive.
When he arrived at the hospital, he explained that he was informed by security guards and hospital staff that two patients had been brought to the hospital from the accident.
“The hospital staffers told me that there was still one more person lying on the road, at the scene of the accident.”
Not seeing his son, Smith said, he rushed from the WDRH to the accident scene. On the way, he saw a friend who informed him that his son’s body had just been taken to the WDRH in a hearse.
On returning to the hospital, Smith said, he was confronted with his son’s lifeless body in the hearse.
The junior Smith was pronounced dead on arrival at the WDRH.
