Dec 08, 2008 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
I came across a letter (in SN, Dec 7, 2008) by George Cave in response to Montgomery Chester on the existence of Santa Claus. While Mr. Cave highlights the philosophical dimensions of the existence of Santa Claus, I wish to go off on another tangent on the Santa Claus issue, and do not wish to add to the ‘logic’ argument.
Many Christians staunchly oppose the ‘exultation’ of Santa Claus at Christmastime, instead of the Christ. Indeed, it is Christ who sees all of someone’s good and bad deeds, instead of Santa. And it is Christ who possesses omnipotence to be several places all at the same time, while Santa can only be at any one place at any one time. Get the picture?
Some have even pointed out that the word SANTA can be rearranged to spell SATAN. Being a Christian, I, at one time, was opposed to the seemingly aggressive glorification of Santa, instead of the Christian reason for Christmas: Christ.
But that all changed when I read an article by a European pastor, who stated that we should not discredit Santa and seek to erase him. In fact, Santa is so engrained in Christmas that he is found in the psyche of almost everyone, whether he exists or not.
What changed my concept of labelling Santa as part of the ‘axis of evil’, was when that pastor stated that he does not tell his grandchildren that Santa does not exist. Instead, he tells them that Santa is a good person.
But he also explains to them that Santa is only a worker, a ‘servant’ for “Someone bigger.” Santa is in fact a helper of the One who is the ultimate embodiment of goodness, love, compassion, and generosity.
This perception of Santa enabled his grandchildren to recognise the ‘true person’ behind Christmas.
Santa was and has been a good person. In a world today, where it seems that the light of all things right and good is being overtaken by an increasing ‘darkness’, the concept of Santa is welcome. My endorsement of Santa is in no way a compromise of my Faith; after all, Santa works for the One of the season. And Santa is only called into service at Christmastime.
He exists as a philosophical concept, as a moral and cultural symbol. So, does Santa exist? By all means yes.
