ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – The completion of the Rose Hall Town Fire Station was delayed as a result of financial constraints. The estimated date of completion is now mid-January, and not this month as was anticipated.
President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Bhigroog Poonai, said that the building is 90 percent completed, with electrical work 75 percent done. The structure is yet to be painted, and the driveway to house the fire tender is to be constructed.
In September, the design for the Rose Hall Fire Station had to be modified due to spiralling costs. The Chamber also intended to stick within the $15 million budget set for the project. The size of the building remains the same, 37 feet by 45 feet, but the design was tailored.
The actual structure would cost some $9 million, the drive way $1.5 million, the fence $1.5 million and other bits and pieces would absorb the remainder.
The Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce injected $1.5 million after the July 2008 Berbice Expo and Trade Fair, and $500,000 from the 2005 Expo.
A number of overseas based and local Guyanese, in addition to business entities, have contributed to the cause in both cash and kind.
In March this year, consolidation work on the 159 by 59 foot plot of land to house the fire station got started. It is situated to the rear of the Rose Hall Police Outpost.
The building is being erected by the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce.
In the initial stages, manpower would be used from the Constabulary department of the Interim Management Committee as well as from volunteers. The daily operation would be supervised by members of the Guyana Fire Service.
Government, through the Fire Department, is prepared to train personnel and provide the fire fighting equipment.
