Heath Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy is of the opinion that the efforts of Health Care Workers are not recognized enough.
During a recent graduation ceremony, the Minister reiterated the call for citizens to acknowledge the efforts of health care workers more.
He said that while he agrees with those who scrutinize health care workers, he is also fond of the idea when persons simply laud the efforts of those workers as well.
Dr Ramsammy pointed to the fact that the health sector delivers more than 18,000 healthy babies a year and only some 20 stillbirths. Ever so often there is only mention of the deaths. On that note, the Minister challenged health care workers to reduce the number of stillbirths. There should be none, he said.
“We must condemn when the need arises and we must give praise when it is due…What about the hundreds of lives we save on a daily basis?”
He noted that too often people take time to highlight the negative that sometimes occurs in the health sector and spend less time highlighting the positive.
The Minister said that citizens should at all times rally around health workers for the job they are doing. He acknowledged the fact that every profession is important to society but being able to save someone’s life is more important.
“Teachers and lawyers play a good role in society but think about the role health care workers play. If it wasn’t for them many of us would not have been alive today,” Dr Ramsammy said.
He added that while it is a fact that health care workers are underpaid, sometimes a simple ‘thank you’ can be the motivating factor for them.
“Many times when a patient leaves the hospital ward they don’t even think about mentioning the words thank you; they never even return with a card or something to show their appreciation.”
Minister Ramsammy also mentioned the fact that too often people fail to realise that health care workers are human beings like everyone else.
“How many of you know what it feels like to care for a patient and give your best only when you leave work and return to be told that your patient with whom you have built a relationship has died?…They too need psycho social support,” Dr Ramsammy said.
The Minister further announced that, come next year, the Ministry will be dedicating a special day and a week in recognition of health care workers. He noted that even though that would not be enough, at least the workers will feel more appreciated.
