When the National Book Fair 2008 ended on Wednesday, December 3, at the Wisburg Secondary School in Wismar, Linden, there was a large degree of satisfaction mixed some amount of concern, as always with such an event. Satisfaction in that we were able once again to deliver reading materials to disadvantage communities.
The concern was as always why more persons especially school children did not take this opportunity to be encouraged to read and thereby to enhance their literary and numeracy skills.
Although the theme for this year was ‘Little People Loves Big Books’, the Book Fair was designed to cater for all ages of learners and potential readers.
The National Book Fair 2008 which was organised by the Guyana Book Foundation and Partners was held over a period of two days via December 2 and 3.
Exhibitors included Austin Book Service, BEAMS, Linden Care, National Library – Linden Branch, Michael Ford Bookstore, Varga Foundation, host – Guyana Book Foundation and my booth going under the name ‘Writers in Concert – WICK’.
The official opening ceremony of this fair was chaired by Mr. David Granger with opening remarks made by Mr. Mortimer Mingo, Regional Chairman of Region 10 and the feature address delivered by Mr. Dunstan Barrow.
The Guyana Book Foundation which was founded in 1990 is a not-for-profit NGO which has supported children’s literacy all over Guyana for almost eighteen years.
Its objectives include providing ‘reading materials for children, to increase the ability of children to read and learn, and to build capacity to support a literate environment in Guyana’
The Guyana Book Foundation has its genesis in an organisation, Education Renewal, which was started in 1986 by a group of educators led by Mrs. Olga Bone, Ms Mavis Pollard, Sister Hazel Campayne, and Ms. Agnes Jones together with volunteer tutors which began holding free remedial classes in English and Mathematics for students.
So far the Guyana Book Foundation has staged book fairs in once in Berbice, Essequibo, Uitvulgt, Linden and on a number of occasions in Georgetown.
