The eight players in the national under-17 cricket team from Georgetown were each given a US$50 stipend by the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) at a simple presentation at the Guyana Cricket Board Hostel.
GCA President Bish Panday, who presented the money to the players, said the GCA is happy that out of the 14-man Guyana squad, the sub-Association of the GCA can produce eight persons including the Captain.
“This achievement is the direct result of the competitions we have been playing over the past two years and the hard work that my executive and the clubs have been doing. Credit also has to go to our technical team committee led by former Guyana youth player Alfred Mentore,” Panday said.
Everest, GNIC and GYO produced two players on the side while Malteenoes and GCC produced one each.
“I wish to congratulate all of you and ask you to do your best. We expect you to behave yourselves, work hard and make your country proud. You are not going for a party but to play cricket and while you will have the opportunity of seeing places and having fun, you must remember that it is because of cricket that you 14 players out of many hundreds who play at this level in Guyana, have been selected to go to Trinidad,” Panday told the entire team after the presentation.
The GCA head stressed the importance of discipline and hard work and reminded the youths that all Guyana will be reading about what they do in the papers and urged them to be positive examples of Guyanese youths.
Skipper Dexter Solomon thanked Panday for the gesture and promised that his team, which is being coached by Orin Bailey and Managed by Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis, will give of their best and be good Ambassadors for Guyana.
Guyana (with just one surviving player from last year’s team in left-arm pacer Andre Stoll) face Barbados in their opening game on Tuesday before facing the Windward Islands the next day. They then oppose Trinidad and Tobago on December 14, Jamaica the next day and the Leeward Islands in their final match on December 17.
The team, minus left-arm spinner Trinson Carmichael, is scheduled to depart Guyana on Tuesday morning. Carmichael, who has to attend to an urgent personal matter in Guyana on Tuesday, will join the team on Wednesday.
Each member of the team was given US$100 by the Guyana Cricket Board.
