The curtain came down on the observance of National Week for Persons with Disability yesterday with a simple concert at the National Gymnasium.
The event, which kicked off just around 15:30 hours, saw several persons with disability performing songs and dramatic pieces. There were also renditions from the GDF Frontline Band, the Georgetown Prisons Steel Pan Band, and GT&T Jingle Competition winner, Cleon Codogan.
The concert was organised primarily by three disabled persons including Jeantte Jordan and Campton Wilson, who are both blind, and Joseph Simons, who is an amputee.
According to Coordinator of the activities, Leon Walcott, the entire week of activities was a resounding success.
He, however, noted that the high point of the week was the school symposium which was held on Friday at the National Gymnasium.
The symposium, Walcott said, featured students who were tasked with sharing their personal views on the notion of disability.
Walcott said that the students’ performance was regarded as very impressive by the specially selected persons, among them Frederick Cox of the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, Ms Stacey John of the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, and Ms Fidel Pitt, a disabled student who attends the University of Guyana. Ms John, due to a disability, is also confined to a wheelchair.
Based on the presentations, it was deduced that a lot of research was done and that the students were able to unearth important information which addressed the physical conditions as well as access to medical treatment and education as these relate to disabled persons, Walcott said.
Among the schools from which the students were drawn were Saint Stanislaus College, Central High, Christ Church Secondary, Eccles Primary, Diamond Primary, Graham’s Hall Primary, the David Rose School for the Handicapped, and the New Amsterdam Special School.
This year’s observance of Disability Week saw the collaboration of the 10 disability organisations in Guyana, which have come together to form the Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities.
And according to Walcott, the venture was a total success which resulted from real collaboration and unity.
He also noted that while the disability is highlighted annually, this year for the first time saw greater participation than previous years.
He said that the week commenced last Sunday with an awareness march, which included close to 200 persons.
