…Abiola Semple is top student
Some 40 young men and women were yesterday rewarded for their hard work over the past six months at the eighth graduation ceremony for the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Patient Care Assistants programme.
Of the graduates, Abiola Semple was judged the Best Graduating Student. Other students who received special awards included Sheona Savory, for being the Most Improved Student; Lester Dawson, for being the Most Resourceful Student; and Amanda Damon, the Best Mathematics Student.
Ms. Semple, in her Valedictorian Speech, congratulated her colleagues for their effort and commitment to the programme.
She said that the experience they collectively gained throughout the six-month programme has indeed changed their lives. She further thanked those who afforded her the opportunity to be a part of the programme.
She lauded Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital, Michael Khan; Director, Assistant Nursing Services, Owen John; and Director, Nursing Services, Audrey Corry.
Ms. Corry, in her charge to the graduates, urged them to be committed, respectful, compassionate, patient and, most of all, be good to themselves and others.
She told them that as they go about what they have been training for, to do it to the best of their ability, and moreso, do it the way they are expected to.
She encouraged the students to be committed at all times, and not become complacent, since their efforts are of great importance to those whom they will be serving.
As it relates to respect, she asked that even as they now go into the work force, they will earn their respect, and not demand it. She further reminded them to be compassionate in dealing with their patients.
“When you go about dealing with a patient, try to put yourself in their place and think of how you would want to be treated on the sick bed,” Ms. Corry noted.
Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy called on the gathering and all citizens to recognize the efforts of all health care workers.
According to Minister Ramsammy, while to some Patient Care Assistants may not be seen as important as doctors and nurses, this should not be so. He reminded the graduates that their services are equally as important as any other health care worker.
Dr Ramsammy further urged them to remember to exercise humility as they go about their jobs.
Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC, Michael Khan, in his remarks to the graduates, touched on the issue of punctuality. He further thanked the batch of students for making the programme a success.
The Patient Care Assistant programme was initiated back in 2000, and to date has deployed people to hospitals in almost every administrative region.
This year’s programme commenced in May and concluded in October. There was a slight disruption in the execution of the programme with the destruction of the building that housed the classes due to a fire which was set to the building last August. Despite this, the programme was nevertheless completed.
