Thirty-two-year-old Neil Daniels was yesterday released on $180,000 bail by Magistrate Sherdel Issacs-Marcus at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, when he appeared before her charged with felonious wounding.
Daniels, of 57 Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, is accused of wounding dredge owner Claude Kanhai, of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, with a hammer during what appeared to be a robbery attempt on Wednesday night last.
The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Daniels was apprehended, still wearing his bloodstained clothes, by a Special Constable attached to the Melanie Damishana office of the National Insurance Scheme.
According to the police, Daniels, who is known to the victim, was being entertained at the dredge owner’s home when the attack occurred.
At about 20:30 hours on Wednesday, Kanhai was about to go downstairs to park his car, which was on the road, when it is alleged that Daniels attacked him with a hammer.
Although badly hurt, the elderly dredge owner managed to put up a fight, forcing his attacker to flee.
But not knowing the area, Daniels did not get too far.
A Special Constable who was on duty at the National Insurance Scheme office at Melanie Damishana observed the man passing and acting suspiciously, and he called out to him to stop.
The man decided to run, but was pursued by the constable, who eventually caught up with him.
“When I saw him I knew something was wrong, because nobody walks where he was walking, especially in the evenings,” the constable told this newspaper.
Seeing that the man’s clothes were covered in blood, the constable got more suspicious.
“When I see the blood, I tell he, ‘I feel you kill somebody, boy, you kill somebody,’ ” the constable said.
He added that the man admitted harming someone, and even began expressing remorse for his actions.
The man was subsequently handed over to the police, who later recovered the hammer and knife that were used in the attack.
Daniels was charged under Section 57 of the Criminal Law Offences Act, and could face life imprisonment or whipping and flogging.
