Police on the East Bank of Essequibo have arrested a man in connection with last Sunday’s murder of a popular gas station owner.
Reports are that following the discovery of Brandis Roberts’s body on Sunday, the police arrested some seven persons. They were subsequently released and acting on information, the police then held on to a man from the Parika area.
A source close to the investigation said that while they have the man in custody, the police are still looking for another man who may have been involved or might have some idea of what transpired.
Roberts, 67, called ‘Uncle Brandis’, was reportedly discovered lying face-down in the kitchen area in the bottom flat of his two-storey home.
His hands were tied with lengths of cord and a shirt was tied around his throat.
It is unclear whether any valuables were stolen, since the victim was still wearing two gold rings when the body was found. A canister containing documents was also found intact, although attempts had reportedly been made to force it open. In addition, the businessman’s cellular phone was untouched, as were the keys to his gas station and his car, which was parked outside of the house. A post mortem examination preformed on Roberts revealed that he died as a result of asphyxiation due to strangulation.
