Dear Editor,
I am appalled by what seems to be the daily functioning of the Georgetown School of Nursing. I am a single parent who struggles to make ends meet.
My tasks became none the easier when my daughter decided that she wanted to become a nurse, hence her enrollment to the Georgetown School of Nursing.
I have to admit that the $15,000 she receives from the Ministry of Health as her stipend helps, but I’m still charged with ensuring that she has a ready supply of academic materials, which we know are very expensive.
So when she came home a month ago and told me that there is no Human Biology and related Bio-Chemistry Tutor, I immediately became worried and decided to monitor the situation, since I was told that this subject along with Personal and Communal Health are what they will be tested on at the end of the first year in order to continue onto year two, and by her estimation they are behind in the syllabus.
Sometime last week she came home and told me that due to the size of her batch, a decision was made to relocate them to the Critchlow Labour College building.
It is now the third day since, and no classes have been held. Further, I have been told that there’s still a shortage of lecturers.
What is troubling me, apart from the decision made by the Ministry of Health to accept such a large number while the staff and facilities seem to be in short supply, is the fact that the administration and inadequate staff of the school are located in one area and a Batch consisting of just under 200 nursing students is located in another sitting idly.
I’m appealing to the Minister to intervene in this matter, which has devastating repercussion for the future of our health sector if not rectified.
