Christopher Braithwaite, 46, of 32 Lyng Street, Charlestown, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with threatening his common law partner, Moltia Newman. He pleaded guilty.
On Saturday November 29, 2008, at their 32 Lyng Street, Charlestown residence, the defendant and Newman got into an argument over what he called her provocative dressing while there were others around.
The defendant stated that Newman went downstairs revealingly dressed in a pair of very thin tights and short top, which combined to display her underwear. He said he told her to ‘go put on some clothes.’ He added that as a result the argument started.
When asked by Magistrate Robertson why she wore the tights, Newman said that Braithwaite doesn’t give her any money to shop for clothes. “He always treating me like a little child.”
Braithwaite told the court that the only harsh words he ever told Newman were “If you think you will disrespect me like that again, I will done yuh.”
Magistrate Robertson placed the husband on a one-year bond for the sake of keeping the peace.
