The Christmas season is here and with the deadline already in place for posting mail, the Guyana Post Office Corporation said that it is prepared for the season.
Speaking to Kaieteur News was Deputy Post Master General, Henry Dundas, who noted that all the necessary measures have been put in place to deal with the timely distribution of both local and overseas mail.
According to Dundas, the deadline for posting overseas mail will be on December 11 whereas the deadline for local mail will be on December 20.
Dundas said that to deal with the Christmas mail all post office staff were called out and none will be allowed to go on leave.
In addition, there has been additional Custom staff, who will be assisting with the heavy traffic at the GPOC’s main office.
For the distribution of local mail, Dundas said they have some 400 staff members assigned.
As for mail heading overseas, Dundas pointed out that the Post Office has been in contact with all the different airlines.
He added that the various airlines have pledged their commitment and thus far have been doing a tremendous job in getting the mail out.
Dundas added that special emphasis and focus will be placed on packages since people into the illegal trade may want to capitalise at this very busy time.
Dundas said the GPOC staff would be working closely with the Customs officers in sorting out and screening packages.
He said that with the new measures the post office has implemented in the past to tackle the illegal trade of trafficking narcotics and other illegal items will be beefed up at this time.
Dundas further noted that with the implementation of the measures, there has been a decrease in illegal items being shipped among mail.
He, however, noted that despite this decline in illegal items, the GPOC staff will not become complacent at a time like this.
