Dear Editor,
I join in extending my respect to Mrs. Debra Serrao for the loss of her son, Navin Serrao, with respect to a published article in the SN dated 11-28-2008 ‘Waiting for justice.” And I wouldn’t exactly agree with the writer on a few things mentioned.
It was mentioned that, had her husband been alive, he would have hunted down his son’s murderers and gotten justice. I don’t know the facts, but does this writer have concrete evidence about the persons/s responsible for the death of Mrs Serrao’s son? Have you shared data with the investigators, so that they can pursue the matter?
As much as many of us wish that the police could execute their work in a more positive manner, it’s their responsibility to civil society to have these situations addressed.
Bear in mind that we don’t have a “forensic science facility” and trained personnel to properly conduct investigations.
So, we have got no choice but to put up with whatever is available to the force in producing results.
We don’t need the world to go blind from taking an eye for an eye. Do we? We also need to be very careful in the manner we hope to approach situations, because, from our actions, matters could get even more complicated for society.
In the USA, there is a term called “cold cases” (un-solved cases), but it is better known in Guyana as “colder cases.” Example: The case of deceased Monica Reece. On the other hand, I don’t think that it is healthy for anyone to take a seat and wait their turn for justice, because it could be dangerous for one’s health.
Time would be better spent with positive memories of loved ones who died inhumanely.
