Dear Editor,
It is truly amazing to know that the beauty of expression is concealed in poetic language. This statement of truth came to me even as I am in great expectation for the coming event at the National Library on Saturday, 06 December, 2008, at 09:00hrs.
This event is sponsored by The Laparkan Group of Companies. The compact Bible dictionary describes poetry as thus: ‘We recognise as Poetry literature which has regular, rhythmically patterned form and imaginatively concrete, emotionally charged substance.
If the substance is lacking to the form, we call it verse; if the form is lacking to the substance, we call it poetic prose”.
There is a growing recognition that the Bible [some of the books] are written in poetic language both in rhythmically-patterned form and emotionally charged substance. It is believed that the success behind Jesus’s ministry was his unusual ability to communicate in poetic expression or language.
There is a special beauty that arouses strong emotions, especially when the poet uses metaphorical language.
Undoubtedly, Jesus, when He spoke, captured the imagination of countless women. Was He romantic in His expression? I think He was.
In the book of Luke, a beautiful and classic poetic expression is recorded by the physician of Jesus’s words, so much so that a woman who recognised beauty in poetry declared, in Luke chapter 11, verse 27: “Blessed is the womb that bear thee, and the paps which thou has sucked.”
The reason for this woman’s expression was the fact that, when Jesus spoke, His language was poetic in the highest degree.
When this Man spoke, multitudes were aroused and persuaded to follow His teachings. On another occasion, the men of the Chief Priest and Pharisees, who were described as officers, declared after hearing Him speak: “Never man spoke like this Man.” The Gospel of Saint John, chapter 7: verse 46.
Poetry, then, is the language of the soul; the expression of deep thoughts that dictate action. Women gravitate to poetry more than men, especially when the poem is romantic. And most romantic poetry is done by the male for the female.
Something to consider is lyrical poetry; expressive and rapturous, also jubilant. This is why romantic poems are more passionate, tender and amorous for a woman who is in love.
It is the beauty and the power within the poetic expression that is compelling and commands attention.
Today, it is believed that poetry has in many ways lost its prominence, this is why the theme for the event at the National Library this weekend is: “Reviving and restoring the dynamics of poetry reading.”
For all poetry lovers between the ages of 13 and 30, come to the National Library and be treated to beauty with a difference.
