Robbery victims identify assailant, but man claims mistaken identity

Alfred Benjamin, 21, was yesterday granted $45,000 bail, whereas his 16-year-old accomplice was denied bail after the two made their court appearances before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a charge of robbing Eon Henry of $10,000 along with a wallet valued at $1000.
It is alleged that the two committed the act on November 29 at Longden Street. It is also alleged that, on the same day, they robbed Rakesh Outar of $1000. They both pleaded not guilty.
Alfred Benjamin, in his defence, told the court that he has a four-year-old son. He added that, on the day in question, he was outside Demico House at his cousin’s stall when the police came and asked for his name.
The accused said that after he told the police his name, “The officers told me that I’m wanted for a robbery”.
He also stated that both Henry and Outar identified him, but that it was a case of mistaken identity.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred at around 15:00hrs (3:00pm) that day, and Benjamin and the 16-year-old gave the police different versions of what really happened. Further, the two men were caught shortly after the crime was committed.
The 16-year-old was denied bail because the court could not ascertain his real address or age, and no relative was in court to act as surety. The two are expected to make their next court appearance on December 30.
Also appearing before the said magistrate was Mark Fallon, 29, of ‘E’ Field Sophia, who pleaded guilty to simple larceny. He is now serving a two-year sentence because of the act. On November 28, Fallon stole one gold chain with a diamond pendant, valued at $213,000, from Mauchanie Laklag.
When asked to explain to the court why he stole the chain, the man said that he had not been working for months and he just wanted some money.
He added that he was frustrated that day, and he saw Laklag walking along Regent Street and he just snatched the chain.
