Dear Editor,
In response to a column appearing in today’s (December 1) edition of the Kaieteur News, captioned “Give local farmers the first option,” I would like to address some inaccuracies and misconceptions contained therein.
The anonymous author of this article (Peeping Tom) sought to convey that local farmers and investors are not offered equal opportunities to invest in Guyana’s agriculture sector when compared to persons residing outside of the country.
Although the author failed to provide any factual basis for this ill-advised claim, an attempt is made to suggest that the hosting of regional and international agri-business investment activities by Government is an indication that local farmers/investors are being denied access to equal opportunity, citing the acquisition of land as an example.
Obviously, no attempt was made by the author to access information from the key agencies responsible for facilitating agri-business investment in Guyana, namely, the Guyana Office for Investment and the Guyana Marketing Corporation.
Had this been done, the author would have known that all investors for a given project are offered the same concessions, and must adhere to the same procedures.
Every day, there is a sustained campaign to encourage more locally based farmers and investors to invest in the sector. That is one of the main objectives of the Grow More Food Campaign.
The agri-business investment opportunities highlighted at international events, such as the just concluded seminar/mini exhibition held in New York, and mentioned by the author, are opportunities that are continuously promoted right here in Guyana.
The New York event was largely attended by members of the Diaspora, who were the key target audience, as well as other potential investors.
Is the author suggesting that no attempt should be made by Government to attract agribusiness investment in Guyana, beyond the country’s borders?
Can the author produce a shred of evidence to bolster the claim of local farmers/investors not being offered equal opportunity?
With Guyana’s vast land and water resources and abundant agri-business investment opportunities, the country quite frankly needs all the investors it can attract, whether local, from the Diaspora, or further afield.
It is time that we support whole-heartedly attempts to move our country forward, and not be stuck in a pessimistic mode. Guyana Marketing Corporation commits itself to fully brief the author (whoever he/she may be).
