The Berbice Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) Special Events Committee in conjunction with the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) last Thursday hosted a successful First Aid Clinic which attracted forty participants drawn from first and second division cricket teams and secondary schools in the Ancient County.
The clinic was conducted by Sgt. Seon Duncan, Privates Samuel Leitch and Troy Rowland of the Medical Arm of the Guyana Defence Force.
The 40 participants were exposed to training on the basic treatment of burns, heat related emergencies (heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps), fractures, strains, bee stings and CPR.
This was aimed primarily at equipping them to deal with any given situation should a member of their cricket club or school mates suffer from one of the above mentioned conditions.
The facilitators also entertained numerous questions posed by the participants who were eager to learn as much as possible.
In opening remarks, Hilbert Foster, Chairman of the Special Events Committee of the BCBC and Secretary of the RHTY&SC, urged the participants to take full advantage of the clinic informing that the clinic was the first of its kind ever organised by the BCBC.
And while encouraging the participants that their health and fitness are very important, Foster said that many more clinics of as similar nature would be organized.
“The BCBC is committed to assisting cricketers and students develop themselves into being the best.”
Acting BCBC President Keith Foster, who declared the activity open stated that cricket development in Berbice during 2008 was unprecedented and this was as a result of hard work, visionary planning and team unity among board members.
He challenged the representatives of the clubs and schools to learn as much as possible and in turn ensure they impart the good news to others resulting in numerous persons in Berbice being educated on how to respond to any medical emergencies.
Gratitude was expressed to the Guyana Defence Force for accepting the invitation to share their expertise and the RHTY&SC for hosting the clinic.
Sgt. Duncan congratulated participants on their newly acquired skills which he said can one day save the life of a colleague or teammate.
He expressed the continued support of the GDF for future clinics of this nature. The clubs attending included the Police, Skeldon, Kildonan, Scottsburg, West Berbice, Port Mourant, Black Bush Polder, Courtland, Tucber Park and RHTY&SC.
Schools participating were Manchester, Berbice Educational Institute, New Amsterdam Multilateral, Berbice High, Canje Secondary, Port Mourant Secondary, J.C. Chandisingh and Lower Corentyne Secondary.
