PLEGT ANKER, EAST BERBICE – Some 200 residents from communities between Kortberaadt and Mara, East Bank Berbice, have benefited from medical outreach programmes recently.
The medical team comprised doctors from the New Amsterdam Hospital, was headed by Dr. Khalika Persaud, and included Dr. Shivkumar Ganesh, Dr. Narinedatt Sooknanan and a dental technician and staff.
The project, which was organised by the New Amsterdam Rotary Club, saw patients with various complaints, including hypertension and diabetes. The dental team also did 24 extractions on children. A few of the younger ones from some communities were suffering skin rashes, which may have been caused by the water.
The first stop was at Light Town, almost 13 miles from New Amsterdam. Thirty individuals were treated there. The larger clinic, which was at Plegt Anker, some 19 miles off New Amsterdam, treated 170 residents.
The drugs and other medical supplies were provided by the New Amsterdam Hospital.
As part of Oral Health Month, members of the Rotary Club distributed toothpaste and toothbrushes to children at both locations. The grown-ups each received mouthwash and rinses supplied by the New Amsterdam branch of Geddes Grant (Guyana Ltd).
This medical outreach was the first one for this year. Last year, the club held three such programmes, where some 500 residents from Black Bush Polder, Number Sixty-Four Village and Bara kara derived benefits.
Unlike other years, the team was unable to visit Barakara this year, due to financial constraints. But a successful sari pageant recently has provided the funds that will allow for a January 2009 medical outreach in the Barakara locality, some 50 miles up the Canje River.
Meanwhile, the focus now is on the needy children’s Christmas party, slated for December 14. This year, some 200 children have been identified from New Amsterdam and its environs, East Canje and areas along the Central Corentyne.
