DEAR EDITOR,
The current situation of football in Guyana has more problems than solutions. The private sector, the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) have all contributed directly or indirectly.
I strongly believe that, with positive support, we strong, patriotic Guyanese could help better football in Guyana.
I am a patriotic Guyanese and a fanatic fan of Guyana football. I could not let the current problems facing Guyana’s football stop my support for the players and the game. With very limited resources, I have helped a lot of the players from Linden to further their careers.
In 2001 I took Kayode McKinnon to Spain for a 3-month tryout with Los Palmeros, a second division team.
In 2002, I wrote an autobiography on McKinnon “The Magician Feet”.
In 2005, I helped Charles Pollard come to USA for a tryout with the Atlanta Silver Backs, a first division club here in the US.
He was not signed because of contractual dispute with his then club, San Juan Jabloteh, in Trinidad’s pro league.
In 2006, I designed and donated a professional web site to the Guyana Football Federation (www.Guyanaff.com)
In 2006, I Negotiated a one-year contract for Charles Pollard with USL Brooklyn Knights.
In 2007, I worked along with Jamaal Shabazz in securing a contract for Nigel Codrington to play with USL Cleveland City Stars football club (clevelenadcitystars.com)
In 2007, I wrote and produced four AIDS awareness TV commercials, starring Charles Pollard and female referee Cynette Jeffery, that have been airing since on Linden NCN TV station.
In 2008, I negotiated a contract for Randolph Jerome with USL Cleveland City Stars football club (clevelenadcitystars.com).
I secured contracts for Kevin Beaton, Quacy Johnson and Marlon Maxius in the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League.
I started the Guyana USA Soccer League in Brooklyn, which gears the Guyanese football Diaspora. (www.GUSL.net)
There are a few things that I would recommend to the GFF. The GFF should be more media friendly and effective. The GFF should focus on a national league for both men and women; this will increase the national pool and eliminate the redundancy of the national players.
For a better Guyana, the GFF should build a close relationship with other sport entities, especially cricket, to help build a stronger, unified Guyana through sports. In the future, all national players should sign a contract with the GFF before going into camp for any tournament.
