Traditional local cricket whipping boys Essequibo lost both of their matches on Sunday in the Pepsi/Carib 20/20 Inter County cricket competition at the Blairmont ground in West Bank Berbice to set up a Demerara/Berbice final under lights at the National Stadium from 19:00hrs on Friday.
Watched by a large crowd in sweltering heat, Berbice, who beat Demerara in Saturday’s opening game, dismissed Essequibo for 89 in 19 overs on a very good track for batting and then made 93-2 in reply off 11.3 overs.
Debutant Visham Lall hit four fours in 33 but only former national youth player Latchman Rohit (16) and debutant Wayne Holder (15) of the other batsmen reached 15 as West Indies under-19 left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul followed up his three wicket-haul on Saturday with 3-14 while the Crandon siblings, off-spinner Royston (2-28) and pacer Esuan (2-21) supported with the ball for Berbice.
Former West Indies under-19 opener Richard Ramdeen clobbered four fours and two sixes in an attractive unbeaten 42 and got support from Test left-hander Narsingh Deonarine, who hit five fours and a six in 34 as they shared in a 50-run second wicket stand after Royston Crandon was run out for one with just a single on the board when Berbice began their reply.
After Lall dismissed Deonarine at 51-2, Assad Fudadin (13*) joined Ramdeen to ensure Berbice remained the only unbeaten team in the competition.
In their second game, Essequibo reached 127-8 off their allotted 20 overs on the fast outfield with Skipper Norman Fredericks stroking three boundaries in 35. Rohit made 32 and Lall 18 as opening bowlers; National 20/20 medium pacer Chris Barnwell and off-spinner and West Indies under-19 Vice/Captain Steven Jacobs had 3-16 and 2-14 respectively for Demerara.
Barrington then unleashed a scintillating array of shots in his entertaining 63 to see Demerara to 129-3 off 17.3 overs.
Barrington, a former Guyana under-19 who played for the President’s X1 against the touring Sri Lankans in Guyana earlier this year, hammered seven fours before he was caught in the deep off under-17 pacer Rensford Beaton with victory 25 runs away.
West Indies youth player Rajendra Chandrika (5) fell to Lall at 1-8 while Fredericks removed his opening partner Barnwell (8) as Demerara slipped to 13-2 but former West Indies under-19 batsman Gajanand Singh added 90 for the third wicket with the in-form Barrington.
Singh, who now resides in West Demerara, hit three fours and a six in his undefeated 38 in only his second game for Demerara after previously playing for Berbice where he is from. Jacobs (6*) was the other not out batsman when victory was achieved.
