The recently constructed starting gates sit ready for the scheduled action on December 7 at Port Mourant.
The management of Port Mourant Turf Club on the Corentyne Coast has left no stone unturned in ensuring that the Sunday, December 7 Race Meet will be one of the best to be staged.
To maintain the club’s top billing, the Directors took members of the public and the media on an inspection tour of the facility last Thursday where they witnessed first hand the recent infrastructural work that was done to the tune of millions of dollars.
The new multi-million dollar starting gates that caters for a number of horses entering simultaneously will be tested for the first time and currently attendants have been doing practice starts to test its efficiency.
The public will also have an opportunity to see most of the new facilities that has been constructed, including the newly refurbished grand stand and the recently relayed track.
According to one of the officials, their effort is all part of trying to improve the standard of horse racing in the country and return it to the glory days of D’Urban Park and bring it in line with the rest of the Caribbean.
Seven races are carded with the C class 1600m gallop, carrying a first prize of $300,000, being the main attraction of the day.
The three-year-old race for horses born and bred in Guyana and the West Indies has $200,000 on offer for the winner and will see them battle over a similar distance.
The two-year open, 1200m sprint has a first prize of $180,000. The F and lower event has $180,000 available for the winner, while the H and lower event will carry a first prize of $110, 000.
The J and K event will see the winner collect $95,000, while the L class race has $70,000 for the champion.
Entries close today and so far over 60 of the country’s top race horses have entered in what is expected to be a battle of the champions.
The likes of Sequins, Delmur Gold, Ice Follies, Spin and Squeeze, Miss Republic, Little Pannie, Jumbo Joy, Fresh Prospect, Annie’s Play Mate, Laura lee in Flight, Coconut Boy, Sweet Romance, Pixie Fier, La Bayamosa, Sir Balajee, Sacrifice, Fire Power, The Gap, Pinch De Cash, Bad News, Showing Up and the Message.
Over $2.5 million in cash and trophies are at stake, while a number of other incentives will be on offer for participants and spectators.
