Maid jailed for stealing raw gold

A woman who admitted to stealing a quantity of raw gold from her employers has been jailed. Bhena Mohamed, who was charged with simple larceny, made her appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It is alleged that, sometime between November 17 and 25 last, Mohamed stole 12 ounces of raw gold, valued at $2M. To the charge, Mohamed, whom the court was told was employed by the virtual complainant as a maid, pleaded guilty.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that the accused, after being caught, told investigators that she sold the gold and bought some items.
Meanwhile, Mohamed, in her own defence, told the court that her boyfriend forced her to steal the gold.
“He told me he needed some money,” Mohamed said. When asked by the magistrate how much money her boyfriend needed and for what he needed the money, Mohamed said she wasn’t told.
She further told the court that, after selling the raw gold, she bought a refrigerator, a gas stove, a microwave and a blender. According to Mohamed, when she was caught, she had only $32,000 left, and that has since been lodged at the Brickdam Police Station.
Before a sentence was imposed on Mohamed, she was told by the magistrate that the offence carries a maximum of 3 years’ imprisonment.
She was, nevertheless, sentenced to 18 months behind bars.
