Police ranks should be rewarded for their bravery, honesty — AFC
Alliance For Change Chairman Khemraj Ramjattan says that, based on the fact that the administration is in the habit of handing out rewards to members of the Joint Services for stellar performances, the ranks who, under fire, apprehended the armed gang that effected the now famous GuySuCo payroll heist should be rewarded.
According to Ramjattan, the men braved danger, given that there was a shootout, and of particular importance, found the $17.2M in the bushes, out of plain sight, and were honest enough to turn the money in.
According to Ramjattan, when the administration set a precedent of rewarding ranks for solving crimes, “then you open up a flood gate.”
He noted that, were the ranks involved in the response to the GuySuCo payroll heist not to be rewarded, it could be viewed as discrimination. “Only when you get people like Fine Man then you can be rewarded.”
The party had earlier commended the ranks for bringing to prosecution the perpetrators of the heist, pointing out that it was commendable, and moreso because, when juxtaposed against reports and images of torture, inhumane detention conditions, and high-handedness that have beleaguered the forces over the past weeks, the public has been able to witness a display of proficiency and professionalism, instead of one of incompetence and ineffectiveness.
“The professional manner in which the forces went about the tasks of investigating and apprehending the suspects, and with the minimum loss of life, is proof positive that they know how to behave and act professionally when the need arises, and that within the forces are outstanding officers and ranks.”
On November 6 last, what started out as a daring daylight ambush and robbery at Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara ended in an exchange of gunfire between members of the Joint Services and the bandits, resulting in two persons — Leon Dundas and Eric Williams — being shot dead and eight persons arrested.
Two of the eight men — Joe Fernandez and Michael Grant — who were also detained, were subsequently released without being charged. Reports are that investigations revealed that the men were in no way linked to the robbery.
Further, there was not sufficient evidence to institute charges.
Six of the other men who were detained following the robbery have since been charged for that heist and several other robberies that were committed in different parts of the country.
One of the men, Dennis Williams, has also been charged with the murders that occurred on February 17 last at Bartica, Essequibo.
