Due to the inclement weather early in the year in the South American country of Guyana, the West Indies Cricket Board of control (WICB) has scheduled Guyana’s first four games in the 2009 Carib Beer Regional four-day First-Class cricket competition outside of Guyana.
Guyana, who won the first of their seven regional first-class titles in 1973 under Rohan Kanhai, has not won the first-class championship since 2002 when Carl Hooper led them to first innings points from Jamaica to give the Guyanese the Busta International Shield.
Guyana, who only for the second time in over a decade failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the regional One-Day competition this year, will face the Windward Islands in their opening game in Grenada from January 9-12 before journeying to Barbados for their second round game against the Combined Colleges and Campuses from January 16-19.
While the Carib Beer competition will be played simultaneously with the West Indies/England home series, Guyana should have the services of their West Indies players for their third round match against the Leeward Islands in Antigua from January 30 to February 2.
The Guyanese then return to Barbados to face the host from February 6-9 before playing their first game on home soil when they face-off with Jamaica from February 13-16.
Guyana will then play Trinidad and Tobago from February 20 with that game ending on Guyana’s Republic Day, a national holiday.
The Guyanese face the Windwards in Guyana from February 22 to March 2, while Guyana and the Combined Colleges and Campuses do battle in Guyana from March 6-9.
Guyana oppose the Leewards in Guyana from March 13-16 before they travel to Trinidad to oppose Trinidad and Tobago from March 27-30.
The South Americans will be in Jamaica from April 3-6 where they will face Jamaica before returning to Guyana for their final round game against Barbados from April 11-14.
Trinidad and Tobago begin their title defence against arch rivals Barbados in Barbados, while this year’s losing finalist Jamaica take on the Leewards in St Kitts in the other opening round match-up.
