Local hockey fans were left in awe as Trinidad and Tobago (TT) star player Kwandwane Brown served up a Thanksgiving treat on the opening day (Thursday) of this year’s Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Festival which is being played, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Brown, who plays for Notre Dame was in breathtaking form in their 5-4 win over defending champions Hikers.

He gave the visitors the lead through a truly magnificent sequence of dribbling, easing past defender after defender, before lashing in a powerful strike from a difficult angle on the right flank in the 10th minute.

Eight minutes later, Alex Gouveia squeezed in a pass delivered from the right side by Jerazeno Bell to level the scores, before Selwyn King regained the advantage for the Trinidadians with a powerful shot past Azad DeAbreu between the uprights.

However, Devin Munroe, who had missed a few chances of scoring earlier managed to tie the game once again with a beautiful effort from close range after eluding two defenders as the teams remained deadlock at the break.

Munroe was back in action in the first minute after the resumption, firing in a blistering shot past the hapless Notre Dame goalkeeper which gave Hikers a slim 3-2 advantage.

King then collected a pinpoint pass from Brown, who had skipped by two defenders with consummate ease, before conveying the assist.

A Nigel Providence goal gave the ascendancy back to Notre Dame, before another display of sheer class accounted for their next goal off the stick of none other than Brown as they led 5-3 nine minutes to full time.

Both teams raised their level of play and it was Shane Samuels, who seemed a shadow of himself, who netted Hikers fourth goal in the 33rd minute, but stout defending and the fear of a scorching counterattack kept the guests in the lead until the final whistle came.

In results of other matches: Canada’s GOA beat last year’s champions GCC 4-1 in a Ladies encounter. On target for the winners were Kate Gillis (10, 33), who netted a brace, while Jenna Habib (17) and Kri Shier (39) completed their tally. Sonia Jardine (4) was the lone goal-scorer for GCC.

GCC defeated Carib Degenerates 9-2 in a Veterans game with Jonathan Yearwood (17, 26, 31, 38) pouring in a helmet trick, Damon Woodroffe (8, 9, 35) a hat-trick and Rawl Davson (11, 23), adding a double. Brian Asregado (27) and Sheldon Corlette (40) got the consolation goals for Degenerates.

Old Fort then edged GCC 4-3 through a pair each from Jonathan Roberts (6, 15) and Aderemi Simon (36, 37).
For GCC, Stuart Gonsalves (8), Andrew Xavier (18) and Chris Xavier (25) were the men on target.

In yesterday morning results – Old Fort made it two wins in a row with an efficient 6-0 triumph over Paradise of TT. J. Roberts (10, 12, 24) poured in a treble, while Jason DeSantos (9, 35) and Askofu Simon (25) were the other contributors. Current Veterans champions Fatima of TT made light work of Degenerates, hammering them 13-3.

Hikers the inflicted a crushing 11-3 triumph over Western Dragons. J. Bell (9, 12, 19, 20), A. Gouveia (8, 9, 39), S. Samuels (16, 37, 38) and D. Munroe (22) set up their first victory, while Leroy Carroll (13), Wrensville Linsdale (18) and Selwyn Brandt (40) responded for the losers.

Old Old Fort beat Malvern 7-2 in Veterans clash. Dexter Wyles (14, 40), Gavin Hope (21, 22), Jeremy Roberts (10), Robert Husein (20) and Richard Jagdeo (39), all scored. A. Marcano (8) and Shawn Alexander (33) netted for the visitors.

GCC defeated Hikers 2-0 in a Ladies match. Trisha Woodroffe (8) and Brennette Gordon (18) ensured victory and in the final game of the extended morning session GCC beat Malvern 5-3. Orland Semple (35, 37, 40) lashed in a hat-trick, while Dwayne Scott (19) and Kevin Spencer (26) were the players to score for GCC. Albert Marcano (14), Colin Byron (25) and Daryl Hume (28) netted for Malvern.

Another round of matches was scheduled to be contested yesterday afternoon followed by the opening ceremony in the evening.
