West Indies play their first game on their tour to New Zealand next Friday when they oppose Auckland in a three-day affair and the Caribbean are hoping to win their first Test series against New Zealand in 12 years and their first against a team ranked higher than them since they beat Sri Lanka in 2003.
After encountering a slight delay due to Visa problems, West Indies team Manager Trinidadian Omar Khan says his team is upbeat and fully focused on the challenge of taking on New Zealand in the coming weeks as the players continue preparations for the upcoming series.
According to Phillip Spooner, the team’s Media Liaison, since arriving in Christchurch the players have had several sessions to get acclimatized to the conditions and have also had a net session with Head Coach John Dyson.
“Everyone has settled in and we are looking forward to the matches ahead. We are moving ahead with the preparations for what will be a very important tour,” Khan said. “The first match is a week away so we have time for all the players to get fully ready for the series.” Khan informed.
Khan, who took over as Manager this year, disclosed that the players are eagerly looking forward to the two Tests, two 20/20 Internationals and five One-Day Internationals. The opening fixture will be a three-day match against Auckland which starts next Friday.
Newcomers Australian-born Jamaican Brendan Nash and Guyanese Leon Johnson said they were both happy with the preparations so far and they were hoping to get opportunities in the upcoming series.
“We had a good day out and everything is going smoothly,” Nash said. “We had a ‘hit’ and it would good to bet into that zone.”
“Things are going well. I had a good work-out and I’m looking forward to the series,” said Johnson who recently made his ODI debut in Canada in the Tri nation series which involved the host, West Indies and Bermuda.
