Eight wins recorded on flawless night in Albouystown
By Franklin Wilson
Watched by another huge and lively crowd the inaugural Guinness ‘Greatest of De Street Football’ competition continues to take the city by storm and Wednesday night’s eight-game card at the Albouystown Basketball Court took pole position in terms of crowd support and involvement.
The sixteen competing teams entertained the spectators with their nippy, short and creative moves, all the games ending in positive results.
And while the main game resulted in a loss for the home team Albouystown by the odd goal in three to Norton Street Werk-en-Rust the result did not matter since the fans were truly entertained from start to finish.
Bent Street also stopped the charge of East Demerara’s Plaisance by a similar score line. Three other matches ended in a similar manner, Broad Street (Leroy Robinson & Troy Cadogan) broadsided West Back Road (Eusi Phillips) in what was an upset win. Wendell St. Hill and Gordon Henry led Kitty to their win over Back Circle who got their consolation goal from Devon Harris, while Queen Street Tiger Bay (Keoma Gravesande & Janial Blackman) were too hot for Meadow Brook Square to handle. They responded through Oswald Cornette.
The other matches saw 2-0 wins for East La Penitence over Alberttown. Trevor Griffith and Dion Layne the players on target. Travis Grant and Troy Kellman had to bring all their experience to the fore to stave off a fierce challenge from North Last entrance. The winning goals were netted in the second half.
And East Front Road with efforts from Andy Duke and Shaka Jones got past Charlotte Street.
As the action intensifies, the National Cultural Centre Tarmac will host tomorrow evening’s matches.
Kingstown match skills with Fourth Street Alberttown, Aubrey Barker Road will test Stevedore Scheme, Sophia come up against Leopold Street, West Ruimveldt Front Road oppose Campbellville, Hope Street Tiger Bay play Alexander Village, Alexander Street face North East La Penitence, Durban Street Lodge engage Charles Street with the feature game bringing together Broad Street B and Festival City.
