–leaves today for 5k on Sunday
By Edison Jefford
Builders Lumber Yard has sustained its unwavering support for distance athlete, Lionel D’Andrade, which made it possible for him to compete in his season–ending 5km races in Trinidad and Tobago beginning this weekend.
Regarded as one of Guyana’s foremost distance campaigners, D’Andrade will leave the country today for the island in which he has had a dominant stint earlier this year. The athlete had carved a niche for himself there.
The 28–year–old athlete is expected to return in mid December after which he will take a much–need rest before preparations for the January–scheduled marquee International Trinidad Marathon commences late next month.
After the Suriname Marathon last weekend, in which D’Andrade lost approximately eight pounds, the athlete’s expectations and optimism were high yesterday ahead of his first 5km race Sunday afternoon in Trinidad.
“I started some work Tuesday for the 5km on Sunday. I felt really strong in the Suriname Marathon so basically Sunday’s race is speed work,” he told Kaieteur Sport yesterday ahead of final preparations before departure.
D’Andrade had spent an impressive and ultimately successful three months in Trinidad at the middle part of this year where he competed in a series of 5 and 10km races, adding to his growing reputation in the region.
At most of those meets, he was able to compete among the region’s best distance athletes, including the great Pamenos Ballantyne from St Vincent and the Grenadines and Richard Jones from Trinidad and Tobago.
The two athletes placed better than D’Andrade at the 2008 South American 10km race in Guyana and are likely to compete on Sunday. D’Andrade is, however, adamant that his previous success against them will prevail.
“I have ran with them before and beaten them. They know what I can do and how I run and I don’t think that they will be much of a problem to me,” a surprisingly bold D’Andrade told this newspaper.
Meanwhile, Alika Morgan’s preparations for the Run Barbados race is continuing as the popular and decorated regional distance star is expected to defend her Caribbean championship title sometime next week.
