Fun, frolic and plenty of scintillating cricket is anticipated when the second annul Inter-County 20/20 cricket tournament bowls off from 13:00hrs tomorrow at Blairmont with defending champions Demerara facing off with Berbice in the opening game.
Essequibo will then be involved in back-to-back-game on Sunday as the round-robin preliminary round concludes with matches at 09:00hrs and 13:00hrs on Sunday. The grand finale will be contested under lights on Friday December 5 at the Guyana National Stadium from 19:00hrs according to the sponsors, a party-like atmosphere will be created in the Party stand for the final game to which admission is just $500.
The three-team competition, which cost $1.2 million to run, was officially launched yesterday at the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) office and GCB President Chetram Singh thanked both Ansa McAl (Carib) and DDL (Pepsi) for their continued support of the competition which plays a major role in selecting the national team for the regional Stanford 20/20 competition.
Singh, the GCB President since 1992, said that 20/20 cricket is the most popular version of the game presently and usually attracts the biggest crowds.
“We decided to play the first three games at Blairmont which generally has good crowd support and admission is $300, while the final will be under lights at the Stadium and should have a big crowd. Pepsi and Carib have been our main sponsors over the recent years,” said Singh who informed that lots of Television promotion will be done leading up to tomorrow’s game in West Bank Berbice.
Ansa McAl’s Marketing Assistant, Jamaican Anjeta Hinds told the gathering that her company is proud, pleased and excited about Carib Beers involvement with the competition since the Beer is the Beer of the Caribbean and cricket is still the game of the Caribbean and Guyana.
“We have so much planned especially for the final when we will have a big party with music and the Carib Girls and a whole lot more in the Party stand at the Stadium. Come out and support since I can guarantee you it will be lots of fun,” Hinds added.
DDL’s Brand Executive Alana Johnson said that DDL has always supported the regional game as the Beverage giants have an unwavering commitment to sport development.
“Pepsi is a beverage which is all about fun and excitement so it is only fitting that this product is associated with the 20/20…the new shortened exciting form of cricket that has taken the Caribbean by storm. We think this is an excellent collaboration. The final will be under lights which will make the game more fun and exhilarating so Pepsi just had to come on board again,” Johnson added.
