Over 100 arrested for theft of electricity

The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has intensified its campaign against electricity theft, countrywide.
According to GPL, over the past two weeks, 110 persons have been arrested for electricity theft during raids, which were carried out during the day and night.

In Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, six persons were arrested, while four more were summoned before the courts for stealing electricity.

The power company noted that in Sophia’s A, B, C and D Fields, a total of 60 persons were arrested. Eleven of them had to appear before the courts to answer charges of electricity theft.

East Coast Demerara had 28 persons being taken into custody, while three persons were arrested in Mocha, East Bank Demerara.

GPL is determined to send a strong message to persons who insist on stealing electricity, the power company stated.

It added that the loss reduction unit of GPL has personnel operating in almost every area and they are conducting raids both during the day and night.

The power company stated that these personnel intend to seek out all those persons who are directing criminal activity at GPL and will have them face the full force of the law.

The penalty for stealing electricity is a fine of $50,000 and a mandatory sentence of one year imprisonment.
This determined stance by GPL comes as the company intends to drastically reduce its losses associated with electricity theft.
