Up to late last night the police and the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard were still trying to locate the crew of a fishing boat, which along with another vessel was attacked by pirates around 10:30 hours yesterday.
Reports stated that the crew of Mark Counter 2 was put ashore in an area not yet identified, after they were left to drift by the pirates.
According to a police press release, an investigation has been launched into an armed robbery which occurred in the Atlantic Ocean off Mahaicony Foreshore, East Coast Demerara.
Investigations revealed that fishing boat captain “Kenneth” and a crew of four men along with another fishing boat captain ‘Walter” and another crew of four were fishing in the Atlantic when a boat with three men, all armed with firearms, came up alongside and held “Walter” and crew at gunpoint.
The armed men took away their 48 H.P outboard engine and a drum of gasoline, leaving them adrift.
They then went to the boat with “Kenneth” and crew and took over the vessel, named Mark Counter 2, with the five crew members aboard and sailed away.
While one crew remains missing, “Walter” and his four crew members have been rescued after another engine was taken out to their boat by the owner of the two fishing boats. They are also assisting in the search for the other crew members.
