A body of a man from Best Village, West Coast Demerara, was fished out of the Demerara River late Tuesday evening after he had earlier gone swimming.
Reports are that 40-year-old Krishna Bhagwandin was seen consuming alcohol at the Vreed-en-Hoop stelling earlier in the day.
The incident occurred some time around 15:00 hours at Plastic City.
A relative of the dead man said that he was told that following the drinking spree, Bhagwandin and two other men went to the river to swim.
This newspaper was told that Bhagwandin was seen plunging into the river but never surfaced.
A search was immediately launched by residents of the area but the man was not found. Residents then went to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station where a report was made. The man’s relatives were also informed and were summoned to the area.
A few movements later as the tide was ebbing, the man’s body was seen floating near the jetty.
Residents managed to pull it in with the assistance of the police. It was then taken to the West Demerara Hospital Mortuary.
A post mortem revealed that Bhagwandin died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning.
