Renting generators is the most feasible option for the Guyana Power and Light Inc. at this point in time, given that there are a number of capitol projects streamlined for the near future.
This is according to Winston Brassington, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Guyana Power and Light Company. He noted, during an interview with this newspaper yesterday, that the projects that are already in train will cater for an enhanced capacity at the power company.
He was responding to criticisms that the power company should have bought the generating sets, rather than rent them.
The generating sets, which are currently being rented from MACORP at a cost of $55,000, will be commissioned this week.
He noted that if the projects to enhance the system were not in place already, then purchasing the $US2.5M generating sets would have been a viable option.
The three 1.6 megawatt Caterpillar generating sets that GPL will be renting arrived in the country last Tuesday.
The items arrived at the John Fernandes Wharf, and were offloaded in the presence of GPL’s Public Relations Officer (ag.) Richard Francois, and other officials of the company.
According to GPL, generating capacity in Demerara has already been boosted with the addition of 2.2 megawatts from its Versailles location and another 2.5 megawatts from its Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara location.
A combination of Wartsila and old Caterpillar generating sets is providing 67 megawatts to Demerara.
Brassington had earlier said that customers can rest assured that there are no planned blackouts during Christmas, but he cautioned that unit failures and other factors beyond the control of GPL may occur.
Technical problems had been the cause of a series of disruptions in both Demerara and Berbice during October and the early part of November, and many of these difficulties have been rectified, according to Cabinet Secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, the minister responsible for energy, recently expressed confidence that power generation was back to near normal levels, but urged the public to aid the process by conserving electricity.
According to Brassington, the Demerara National Grid will be generating some 77 megawatts (MW) of electricity during the Christmas season, when the demand is 70 MW or just above.
