The New Line Aqua Farm’s New Line Cavaliers of West Demerara defeated a Canada line-up in a 20/20 cricket contest at the Canal Number Two Sports Club in West Bank Demerara last Saturday.
The Canadian combination included most of the players who represented Canada in the recently concluded President’s Cup West Indies One-Day tournament in Guyana and according to Public Relations Officer of the Demerara Cricket Board Rovin Stanley, the North American side is planning to return next year as part of their preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy.
New Line Cavaliers batted first and made 194-8 in 20 overs with national all-rounder Christopher Barnwell leading the way with 47. Chabiraj Ramcharran supported with 41 while former Test player Mahendra Nagamootoo made 30.
Qaiser Ali captured 4-11 off four overs for the visitors who reached 190-6 when their 20 overs expired with Abdool Samad leading the way with a pugnacious 70.
Sandeep Jyoti contributed 31 as leg-spinner Nagamootoo, who like Barnwell, played against Canada for Guyana in their final round President’s Cup game at the National Stadium last week, grabbed 4-26 to take the Man-of-the Match award.
Stanley informed that the match was one of the activities organized by Salim Azeez, the proprietor of New Line Aqua Farm, to lift the standard of cricket and increase the participation for the game in West Demerara.
The New Line Aqua Farm committed $600,000 in prizes for Saturday’s match and the local team received $400,000 for their victory while the loosing team pocketed $100,000.
Nagamootoo (Best Bowler and Man-of-the-Match) and Samad (Best Batsman) received $100,000 between them for their impressive individual performances.
