National left-handed batsman Gajanand Singh seems set to make his senior Inter-County debut for Demerara after previously playing at this level for Berbice.
The former West Indies under-19 player, who made his first class and regional one-day debut for Guyana this year, is now residing in West Demerara where he represents New Aqua Line Farm in domestic cricket and no longer plays for Berbice side Young Warriors who he represented in the Neal & Massay national 40-overs competition.
The talented stroke player, who last played for Berbice in this year’s Inter-County 50-overs competition, has also played for his adopted West Demerara team in the national Gafoor’s 20/20 competition.
According to a Cricket Board official, New Aqua Line Farm has been fined $50,000 and banned from competing in any national tournament for the reminder of the year because Singh breached the Guyana Cricket Board rules which prevent a player from participating for different teams in national tournaments in the same year.
Singh is now set to join Colwin Cort and Sean Devers who represented both Demerara and Berbice at the senior Inter-County level after playing for the county they resided in at the youth level. Cort also represented Essequibo in senior Inter-County cricket.
Wicketkeeper Maxwell Fraser, who also plays in West Demerara, could also make his inter county debut since national wicketkeeper batsman Derwin Christian has again been overlooked by the Demerara selectors.
Tyrell Tull, still regarded by many as presently Guyana’s most naturally talented ‘Keeper, is also in the 19-man squad which was released to Kaieteur Sport yesterday via a phone call from President of the Demerara Cricket Board Bissoon Singh.
According to Singh, who is also the President of the East Coast Cricket Board, a practice session has been planned for today from 12:45hrs at Everest after which the 14-man squad to face Berbice in the opening round game at Blairmont from 13:00hrs on Saturday will be announced.
Guyana Skipper Travis Dowlin has been named captain of the Demerara team with first-class off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed as his deputy.
Demerara under-17 coach and former Guyana first-class off-spinner Garvin Nedd makes his debut as Demerara senior team coach, while Samaroo Jailall replaces former Guyana fast bowler Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis as the Demerara Manager.
The in-form Troy Gonsalves, Amid Jairam, Surajpaul Deosarran and Travis Blyden are the new faces in the squad which includes five players who have played in the Stanford regional 20/20 cricket tournament.
Demerara are without their leading players in Lennox Cush, who is injured, along with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Leon Johnson who are with the West Indies team preparing for next month’s tour of New Zealand.
The full squad read: Travis Dowlin (Captain), Zaheer Mohamed (V/Captain), Gajanand Singh, Chris Barnwell, Rajendra Chandrika, Deon Ferrier, Krishna Deosarran, Shemroy Barrington, Steven Jacobs, Maxwell Fraser, Sauid Drepaul, Orin Forde, Kelon Carmichael, Troy Gonsalves, Ravi Sarwan, Amid Jairam, Travis Blyden, Surajpaul Deosarran, Tyrell Tull.
