Albion Community Centre regained the annual Balram Shane trophy when they defeated arch rivals Port Mourant Community Centre by 60 runs in the game played last Sunday at the Port Mourant ground.
In a contest reduced to 30 overs due to overnight and early morning rain, Albion won the toss and elected to take first strike in overcast conditions in front of an appreciative crowd.
They reached 181-6 thanks to West Indies player Narsingh Deonarine who cracked 91 which included (8×4, 2×6).
Albion were in a spot of bother at 63-5 in the 15th over, but Deonarine who was dropped on 21 and 38 came in and waged a virtual one man war. Imran Khan had earlier clubbed a boundary studded 18 which included 3×4 and 1×6.
Bowling for Port Mourant, pacer Yougendra Harrinarine continued his fine recent form with the ball, claiming 3-24 from 6 overs. There was also one wicket each for Rajiv Ivan, Davendra Thakurdeen and Chandrashakar Arjune.
In their reply, Port Mourant found it difficult overcoming the Albion bowlers and ended on 121-8 in their 30 overs despite 41 (3×4, 1×6) from national player Hoomchand Pooran and 37 (3×4) from Parsram Tilkuram.
Bowling for Albion national leg spinner Davendra Bishoo 2-16 and Deonarine 2-23 kept the shackles on their opponents.
At the presentation ceremony which followed, Deonarine Balram, Proprietor of Balram Shane general Store in Rose Hall Town, who did the presentation on behalf of the family, said his family were pleased to be able to give back to the community from which they garner their support and pledged continued support to this and more competitions and community activities.
Albion was presented with the beautiful Balram Shane memorial trophy and $15,000. Narsingh Deonarine received the Man-of-the-Match and the best batsman award, while the best bowler prize went to Yougendra Harrinarine.
The Balram Shane competition is played annually to determine the supremacy of cricket between the two teams.
This was the ninth time this competition was being contested with Albion winning five times and Port Mourant three.
Proceeds from the gate as well as other donations and gifts collected by the sponsor were also divided equally and distributed among the two teams.
Kennard Memorial No 67, No19 and No1 cricket clubs also benefit from the proceeds of the game.
They were all given tickets to sell and keep the proceeds.
