The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports hosted a successful Day of sports at the Hosororo School ground last weekend.
The event, which was organised and sponsored by the ministry, saw two business persons in the area offering support to ensure the successful staging of the activity; Roger Hinds of Mahdia and Amanda Solomon of 112 Mahdia.
The pair assisted financially, donating several cash prizes on offer and also ensured transportation was provided for those traveling for the event.
In the 8-over tapeball cricket competition, champions Hosororo Hill scored 56-5 in the final with man-of-the-match Simon ‘Tiger’ Welcome hitting 27 and Jonathan Peters, former national youth footballer, supporting with 17.
Their opponents, Barabina, were restricted to 46-7 when their overs expired. Jamal Alexander led with 22 and Shawn Alberts 10. Hosororo Hill collected the cash prize donated by Roger Hinds. Six teams were involved in the competition.
Meanwhile, the 7-a-side knockout football tournament, which was the other main attraction in the day’s activity, resulted in Mabaruma Settlement B defeating Hosororo 1-0 in sudden death penalties to cash in on the $25,000 prize donated by Amanda Solomon of Amanda’s one stop shop.
In the preliminary rounds, Hosororo defeated Thomas 2-0 with Dave Solomon hitting in the double, while they drew the bye to the final of the five-team contest. Mabaruma Settlement A edged Wauna 1-0, while Mabaruma Settlement B beat the A team 3-0 before moving onto edging pre-game favourites Hosororo in the final.
An Under-13 match up between Wauna and Hosororo ended 1-1 with Romario Choo netting for Wauna in the first half, while Valentine Soloman scored in the second period to level the tie.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Sports ministry, Steve Ninvalle, told Kaieteur Sport that he was happy with the response from the hinterland community. He expressed special thanks to the two business persons who came forward of their own will and contributed, expressing a readiness to do so in the future.
Ninvalle noted that the pair, especially Hinds, has football at heart and its good to see this kind of response, which he noted augur well for the future. Both have readily come forward to support sports in the past.
While in the Mabaruma and Hosororo areas, Ninvalle donated cricket and football gear there. Ministry football coach Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte is currently in the area conducting sessions there.
The PS informed that these trips he has been making recently to the hinterland areas is good because as an official with government, first hand information on the needs and what is required to aid development is priceless.
He pledged to support the areas he has visited recently and do all possible to aid their quest in developing sports at the grassroots level and further afield.
October 1st turn off your lights to bring about a change!
