Local star racehorse, Sequins of the Jumbo Jet stable, continued its dominance of the C class, while Finishing Touch turned in two superb runs to close out its opponents when the Anjue and Hamlet Park of Mahaicony held its end of year sprint meet last Sunday at their racetrack at Mahaicony Branch Road East Coast Demerara.
Under overcast conditions, Mr. Nazrudeen Mohamed’s Sequins sizzled to claim the $300,000 Banks DIH first prize and the Naljit Memorial trophy in the 1200m sprint for C class horses.
It turned out to be a close contest between Sequins and the American Bred Irish Gel of the Rooney Stable. Sequins took an early two length lead, but by the half way point Irish Gel being ridden by Jockey Nascimento, powered to the front by some five lengths.
As the horses headed for home, the champion horse, Sequins, with Jockey Colin Ross onboard, exploded to retake the lead and win by five lengths, maintaining its undefeated run.
The track was in excellent condition despite recent rain fall and recently improved facilities including a new grand stand, the large crowd on hand were entertained with exciting racing.
Finishing Touch from the Mahaicony racing stables and owned by M. Persaud with Jockey Drepaul aboard, upstaged its more season rivals to take both the J and K and the I and lower events in convincing fashion.
First it bested all comers to take the J and K race and $80,000 purse with Untouchable, Rukia and Red Bull occupying the other spots.
In the I and lower event, Finishing Touch returned to win once again, with a spirited gallop came through to win by some 6 lengths and take the $90,000 first prize.
Rukia was second, while pre race favourites Kavinci and New World finished third and fourth respectively.
In another keenly contested race, Sacrifice of the Rumours racing stable and ridden by Jockey Ramnauth, left its rivals eating dust to take the F class event along with the $150,000 prize on offer.
Last out of the gates, Sacrifice ran down the rest of the field to take the lead at the half way position and powered through, extending its lead to the end. Rude Boy and Brave Heart had to settle for second and third.
The two year Maiden race produced victory for Time Dancer of the Ramroop stable ridden by jockey Drepaul. The win was worth $150,000. In second was Over the Mat, while Tidal Wave floated in third.
Miracle Mind of the Mahaicony Racing stable, with Colin Ross riding, weaved its own spell on the L class to claim $75,000, beating Easy Go and Custom Warrior.
Strike De Fire burned up its challengers in the L class grade 2 sprint to run away with the $60,000 first prize from Ms Prince as Timeless took third place.
Champion Jockey was Drepaul, while the champion stable prize went to Mahaicony Racing stable. M. Persaud was adjudged the champion trainer. Over $2.5 million dollars in cash and trophies were on offer, for the about 60 horses facing the starting gate.
