President Bharrat Jagdeo has said his government is committed to helping the country’s most vulnerable groups, such as children, single parents and vagrants.
The President said there are about 650 orphans in the country and he is appealing to Guyanese to adopt them since the country has about 200,000 households.
“We can easily take all of them out (of the orphanages) and give them a productive life,” he stated. The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has been able to find homes for some 150 orphans.
Meanwhile, regarding people who live on the streets, the President said the government is intent on building a home to house them and help to reintegrate them into society. He said the building is currently being designed.
And President Jagdeo, referring to single-parents, said the government has not yet completed the single-parent register, and as such the $100M allocated in this year’s budget is yet to benefit those families. In addition, he said that no decision has been made on how the funds will be distributed.
