ALBION, CORENTYNE – Thirty residents drawn from Albion, Belvedere and Nigg Settlement on the Corentyne completed a one month Introduction to Windows at the St. Mary’s Anglican Church at Albion Front recently.
The course, which was sponsored by the Benschop Foundation, lasted six weeks and was open to anyone desirous of being computer literate.
Representative of the Church, Romel Ayasammy, explained that the ages of the participants ranged from eight to 67.
The oldest student was Auvril Foo, a 67-year-old. She summed up the experience as ‘wonderful’. She recalled that five years ago a relative offered to teach her but she never really got the hang of it. “I never tried to touch the computer. I was never really interested. These things are so fascinating and it is the very first time I am learning to use the computer. I had to learn because I know computers are all over the world and I must keep abreast with all the changes taking place in the world.”
Mr. Ayasammy explained that the religious body saw the need for persons to be au fait with the changing technology of today’s world.
The name of the instructor is Kayode Lambert of the Benschop Foundation.
Head of the Benschop Foundation, Mark Benschop, said that the aim is to reach out to all communities across Guyana and offer free computer courses. “We are not discriminating. We offer free cake decorating classes and free nail technician courses as well and that’s what we are all about.”
According to him, the Albion area is special to him and as such this community was selected to get the ball rolling in the Ancient County. The follow up programme for Albion should commence early 2009.
“We want to edify persons throughout the length and breath of this country, free of charge.”
Mr. Benschop promised to seek financial help in order to ensure that this objective is met. He noted that, with the aid of overseas donors, the foundation is striving to ensure that as many schools as possible are equipped with computers.
The next beginner’s course for Berbice would be at Union (Number Fifty-three Village) on the Corentyne. This should get started in January and some 100 persons are to be targeted.
The next area is Linden and then Bartica. Later in 2009, the group is expected to move to Region One and other locations.
