Beacon, Fruta Conquerors, Marian Academy & Santos advance to semis
By Franklin Wilson
Beacon, Fruta Conquerors, Marian Academy and Santos have advanced to the semi-finals of the inaugural ‘Williams Cup’ under-11 knockout football competition organised by the Georgetown Football Association.
Playing at the Tucville ground yesterday, Marian Academy had the easiest of wins, a walk over from Strike Again who failed to show up. Beacon endured the toughest fight as they were extended by Thomas United, eventually winning on penalty kicks (2-1) after a 1-1 regulation and extra-time stalemate.
Captain Kevin Andrews had pushed Thomas into the lead with his 15th minute strike, but his opposite number Kerron Heywood evened things up from the penalty spot in the 38th minute for Beacon.
Heywood, who was the highest goal scorer in the Courts under-11 earlier this year, showed his all round ability by putting on the goalkeepers gloves for his side in the penalty shoot out and led them to victory.
Santos came from behind to defeat Sunburst Camptown also in extra time 3-1. Camptown jumped into the lead after nine minutes with a Jaleel Ferreira goal however Travis Fitzpatrick equalised for Santos in the 30th minute. In extra time, Santos banged in two goals while Camptown failed to register any. Seloh Roger (45) and Dwayne Barker three minutes later were the players on target for Santos.
And host team Fruta Conquerors tamed BK International Western Tigers 2-0 with strikes either side of play by Randy Lane from the spot in the 19th minute and Romelo Fraser in the 38th.
Semi-final action will take place on Saturday at the same venue. Beacon will take on Fruta Conquerors from 11:00hrs, while Marian Academy match skills with Santos one hour later.
