For the second year in a row, the ‘B’ Division Team has taken home the gold in the Guyana Police Force First Aid Competition for the Smellie Cup; and the captain of that team, Lance Corporal 18458 Fraser, was voted the Best First Aider.
Of the 15 competing teams, 11had been knocked out previously, and the final four teams consisted of Immigration, Tactical Services Unit (TSU) ‘B’ Team, the ‘B’ Division and the TSU ‘A’ Team.
The first runners-up were the Immigration Team, followed by the TSU ‘B’ Team, and the third runners-up were the TSU ‘A’ Team.
The four teams presented themselves before the three judges, Dr Rajendra Sookraj, Norma Hamilton and Janice Adams, and the audience at the TSU Drill Square yesterday.
As each team came before the judges, each of the four members of each team was questioned on issues ranging from how they would administer care to a patient, to the definition of different types of injuries.
After the question segment, each team was presented with a scenario and was asked to respond to it using the various first-aid techniques they had learnt, using bandages, splints and a stretcher.
This led some of the members of the audience to feel that the teams which performed later in the competition had an advantage over the teams that had performed earlier.
Just before the presentation of prizes, the Chief Judge of the competition, Dr Sookraj, commended the Guyana Police Force for ensuring that the ranks were trained in first-aid techniques, as first-aid can make all the difference between life and death for an injured person.
He added that it was a good idea for cash incentives to be offered to help encourage the ranks to learn the techniques, as first-aid was a life skill and could be put into use in situations that arise on a daily basis.
Dr Sookraj commended all of the teams on their performances and remarked to the teams that did not win that they had learnt something valuable.
Police Commissioner (ag) Henry Greene reminded everyone that first-aid was important, especially for the police, as they are usually the first ones on the scenes of crimes.
He added that since it was so important to police operations, it was essential that the ranks maintain their knowledge of first-aid.
He also commended the winning team, and offered congratulations to the Immigration Team, as they had done so well, especially for a team which is not usually out in the field.
Added to this, the Guyana Police Force Band entertained the audience.
