Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green has said that his officers are trying to ascertain whether or not the developer is building the structure in conformity with the plan submitted to the Central Planning and Housing Authority (CPHA).
Speaking to Kaieteur News yesterday, Mayor Green noted that a resident from Subryanville visited him earlier in the week in regard to the same structure being constructed.
The mayor said that he has since ordered his engineers to verify if the developer is building according to the plan; and if it is found that he is not, then City Hall will immediately move to stop the construction.
Mayor Green noted that City Hall is not responsible for land issues in the city, as that responsibility lies with the CPHA. In this regard, he explained, if the developer received permission for construction, then he would have had to get it from the CPHA.
However, residents told this newspaper that they do not intend to stop the fight. They noted that if nothing is done by the authorities, then they would move to file an injunction at the court.
The residents are now complaining about the condition of the area. They say that since the construction commenced, drains have been blocked and the community is in a total mess.
When Kaieteur News contacted the CPHA for a comment on the matter, and to find out if permission was indeed granted to the developer, the Government officials remained mum on the issue. This newspaper has learnt that the developer received permission from the CPHA to continue with the construction of the three-storey structure, which is slated to facilitate a hardware store, restaurant and bar.
To develop a restaurant and bar in a residential area is illegal. Development planner of the CPHA, Germene Stewart, had told this newspaper in October that it is not the Central Housing and Planning Authority’s policy to grant permission to developers for the construction of commercial buildings in residential areas.
Stewart, when asked if permission was indeed granted to the developer for construction of the building, noted that Chief Development Planner of the CHPA, Rawle Edinboro, was the only person who dealt specifically with that matter.
At that time, he was on vacation. When Mr. Edinboro was contacted recently, he referred all queries to secretary of the board of the CPHA, Ms. Deborah Edwards, whom he said would have all the information as it relates to that specific building.
Ms. Edwards, however, directed all queries to Mr. Edinboro, whom she also said had information on the construction.
Edwards expressed surprise that Edinboro had directed queries to her. She also said that queries should be directed to City Hall.
