The inaugural Fruta Skills Football Tournament Festival hosted by the Berbice Football Association got off to a sparkling start last Saturday with General Manager of sponsor Guyana Beverage Inc. Robert Selman, Marketing Assistant Shameeza Yadram and Berbice Area Manager Eion Smithet in attendance at the Rosignol Community ground.
Recording wins and securing entry to the next round were Corriverton Links, Barzilla, Cougars and N/A United.
Selman in opening remarks challenged the competing teams to display a high level of skills and discipline since these ingredients were necessary for a team to win in this unique form of the game.
In the first match, Corriverton Links in their first outing at this level turned back the challenge of Corentyne Football Club by 113 points to 96, although the goals scored were 3 to one in favour of Corentyne F.C.
However, indiscipline accounted for 45 points being awarded to Corriverton Links when Shervin Crandon was shown a red card and three other team members, yellow cards.
Jeff Rose scored a hat-trick in the 13th, 27th and 40th minute for Corentyne while Corriverton’s lone goal came off the boot of Sherwin Murray in the 70th.
Barzilla FC hammered Mahaicony United by 7-0. Glyston Ghingoree opened Barzilla’s scoring in the 10th minute followed by three consecutive strikes by Cornel Taylor in the 20th, 38th and 55th.
Tucking in a brace was Rakesh Jailall (60 & 77) with the other coming off the boot of Leslie Amsterdam, six minutes before full time. In matches contested on Sunday, Cougars and Real Union battled to a two all stalemate.
Real Union opened the scoring with a penalty converted by Ken Angus 20 minutes into the match, but five minutes on, Cougars leveled through a Gregory Tappin effort. Cougars then went ahead when Winston Benjamin rocked the nets three minutes before the half.
Real Union’s Derwin Nicholson then scored in the 65th to see his team level. Cougars however won by a 93 point margin, amassing 173 points to Real Union’s 80.
In the feature encounter, New Amsterdam United and West Coast Berbice’s Monedderlust also played to a 2 all draw but the former came out victors 127 points to 105.
Netting both goals for NA United was Kelvin Joseph (3 & 24) while on target for Monedderlust were Trevis Henry (69) and Sherwin Johnson (71).
In this version of the game teams are awarded Penalty Points as listed below:
Each goal scored – 15 points gained
Each red card – 15 points to the opposing team
Each yellow card – 10 points to the opposing team
Each corner conceded – 5 points to the opposing team

Meanwhile, patrons will have the opportunity to win attractive prizes every night of the competition. Play will continue tonight and tomorrow with all matches contested under lights kicking off at 19:00hrs.
